BestSelf Behavioral Health has received a $250,000 grant from the Patrick P. Lee Foundation to pay for improvements to its BestResponse Intensive Crisis Center, including upgraded access control and security systems.
The 24-hour facility will open this fall at 430 Niagara St., and is designed to help individuals of all ages experiencing mental health or substance abuse crises, BestSelf said. It will offer a welcoming and “trauma-informed setting” for clients to stay for up to 23 hours and 59 minutes, while receiving immediate help in counseling, medication support and connections to follow-up care from trained professionals.
The facility, which was awarded to BestSelf through a competitive request-for-proposals process, is one of only a few such intensive crisis-stabilization centers that are being developed across the state to avoid unnecessary hospitalization, and provides a “faster, more compassionate alternative to emergency rooms,” BestSelf said.
“We are deeply grateful to the Patrick P. Lee Foundation for their generous support of the BestResponse Intensive Crisis Center,” said Elizabeth Woike, CEO of BestSelf Behavioral Health. “This investment will strengthen our ability to provide timely, compassionate care to individuals experiencing a mental health crisis, while also supporting the first responders who rely on the center. It ensures that those in need receive the right support at the right time.”
BestSelf is working with Erie County Medical Center, Crisis Services, emergency responders and other partners in the community, as well as the Patrick P. Lee and Tower foundations, to create a coordinated system of care.
