MOBILE outgoing calls rose by 7% in the second quarter of 2025, with Telecom Namibia leading the growth.
This was highlighted in the Communications Regulatory Authority of Namibia’s (CRAN) Second Quarter Statistics Bulletin. The bulletin aims to offer a snapshot of the country’s Information and Communication Technology (ICT) landscape across telecommunications, broadcasting, cybersecurity, and postal services for the period 01 April to 30 June 2025.
“In the second quarter of 2025, total mobile outgoing minutes increased by 7%, reversing the 25% contraction observed in the previous quarter. Telecom Namibia recorded the strongest performance with an 11% increase, while MTC posted a 7% rise. MTC maintained a dominant position in call termination, with 97% of mobile outgoing calls terminating on its network,” the report revealed.
The bulletin also indicated a 3% drop in SMS volumes, continuing the downward trend seen in the previous quarter. In contrast, mobile data usage maintained robust growth, increasing by 8%, up from 6% in the preceding quarter.
“This pattern underscores the ongoing demand shift in consumer behaviour, with preferences moving toward datacentric communication platforms at the expense of traditional voice and SMS services,” the bulletin notes.
In addition, the report revealed that social media platforms accounted for 68% of MTC’s total data usage—a 3% decrease compared to the previous quarter. TikTok, Facebook, and WhatsApp each made up 17% of total data usage. Facebook saw a slight 2% drop, while usage of the other major platforms remained steady.
