The cost of running a kettle is set to rise in October – leaving tea drinkers at risk of higher bills, it has been warned . According to the Product of the Year survey, the majority of Brits drink three or more cups of tea a day (35 per cent), with 20 per cent saying they drink an impressive five to 10 cups a day. The Centre For Sustainable Energy has revealed the approximate average cost of running a range of common appliances. You’ll pay around 17p for every ten minutes you use a kettle, on average. That’s based on one with a power rating of 3,000W, so the exact amount depends on your particular one. Tashema Jackson, consumer champion at energyhelpline, said: “Adjusting how much water you use and the temperature you boil your water to, can save you around £6 a year.” READ MORE UK national speed limit could be slashed in ‘half’ with all drivers warned “Our survey reveals that tea and the culture surrounding it is just as important today as it has ever been,” said Helga Slater, a spokesperson for Product of the Year. “But what has changed is the way we brew and drink it. “Brands tapping into speeding up the brew time, intensifying and diversifying flavors and even simply providing delicious/no-fuss snacks to go with tea are just some of the ways we’ve seen innovation take hold of this category and breathe new life into an ancient ritual. “We’re looking forward to welcoming some interesting tea related innovation in the next awards.” Saga said: “An average cup holds around 235ml (8fl oz) of water. A 3kW kettle will boil this amount of water in around 45 seconds. Therefore, only boiling the amount you need could reduce that 6p to 1.1p. “While we’re only talking pence per cup, if your household consumes around five hot drinks per day, but you fully fill the kettle each time, that’s going to cost you 30p a day and £109.50 per year. “Only boil the amount you need, and it reduces to £20.08 a year. A saving that could pay towards a new kettle, should yours break.”
