Hochul’s redistricting retaliation plans hit constitutional roadblock: Gov. Kathy Hochul’s promise to “fight fire with fire” against Texas Republicans’ partisan redistricting faces significant hurdles. Despite her tough talk, New York’s constitution requires a lengthy amendment process that would delay any Democratic-led redistricting until 2028 at the earliest. The only faster option would be a legal challenge filed this month, but experts say time is already running out.

Syracuse may pay $110K to passenger of drunk driver: Syracuse taxpayers may pay to settle a lawsuit from a passenger injured when a drunk driver collided with a city recycling truck in 2020. The Common Council will vote Monday on the settlement, which city attorneys recommend due to New York’s joint liability law that could force the city to pay all damages if found even 1% at fault.
CNY mom of murder victim tells killer ‘I hope you rot in prison, and hell’: Richard Losee, 45, was sentenced to 20 years to life for stabbing his neighbor Scott Lamica to death in September 2024. Losee, who believed Lamica was having a relationship with his girlfriend, showed no remorse during sentencing. “Because of this heinous act, you have destroyed more lives than you will ever know,” said the victim’s mother in an emotional statement. Losee had been arrested the day before the murder for threatening to kill his girlfriend but was released without bail.
CNY family loses house in fire but friends, strangers rally to help: A Sunday afternoon of smoked ribs and football turned catastrophic when the Frederick family’s “forever home” in Hamilton caught fire and was destroyed. Brandon Frederick had been using an electric smoker in the garage when flames were spotted climbing the exterior. Firefighters from four departments responded within minutes, saving the family’s cats with oxygen masks and retrieving precious photo albums. The community has rallied around the family with a GoFundMe raising about $90,000 as they plan to rebuild.

Popular Onondaga County snack maker is moving, expanding: Ma & Pa’s Kettle Corn and Popcorn Factory is moving from its Seventh North Street location in Salina to a much larger facility on Old Liverpool Road. Owner James Bell says the new 10,000-square-foot space is “six to seven times bigger” than their current shop, allowing them to expand their wholesale business to more convenience stores and hotels while growing their retail operations.
Local high school football coach opening indoor sports center: Liverpool High School football coach Joe Sindoni is converting a former lumber business into a 13,000-square-foot indoor sports training center in Salina. The Stelican Field House will feature 8,500 square feet of turf for baseball, softball, soccer, lacrosse and football practice, addressing what Sindoni calls “a shortage of indoor places where kids can work out and train” in the local climate. The facility is scheduled to open in late October, with hourly team rentals costing $175-$200 and individual batting cage rentals available for $40-$50 per hour.
