Convention urged to drive sustainable transformation through tourism

By Shemmeine Harley

Dr. Lawrence Sause, Acting Executive Dean of the School of Business and Public Policy (SBPP), gave an inspiring speech at the 19th UPNG Tourism Convention held at the University of Papua New Guinea.

The convention brings together industry leaders, academics, and students to discuss the growth of tourism in PNG. The theme, “Celebrating 50 years of Nationhood: Driving Sustainable Transformation Through Tourism,” reflects on the sector’s progress since independence in 1975 and explores ways to improve it.

Tourism is an important part of PNG’s economy. The event aims to address challenges and find new opportunities for growth.

Dr. Sause said, “The convention is expected to attract about 400 in-person and 1,000 online participants. It provides a platform for networking, sharing knowledge, and working together.” He also mentioned that industry experts will discuss sustainable tourism, sector challenges, and possible solutions.

This event shows the university’s dedication to helping develop PNG’s tourism industry.
