Icelandic Budget Airline PLAY Ceases Operations with Immediate Effect

Fly PLAY – the budget Icelandic airline with a sizeable presence in Ireland – has gone bust, leaving thousands of passengers stranded and around 400 employees facing uncertainty.

The airline – which operated a Dublin to Reykjavik service as well as a Dublin connection on its transatlantic routes from Iceland’s capital to New York, Boston and Washington DC, and which based four planes here – abruptly went out of business yesterday.

While negative rumours were circulating for months, with the company’s share price plummeting, ticket bookings consistently falling and financial results underperforming; the sudden closure of operations still came as a shock.

The Icelandic carrier posted a brief online note, saying: “Dear passenger, Fly PLAY has ceased operations and all flights have been cancelled. We, kindly, advise you to check flights with other airlines. Some carriers may offer special ‘rescue fares’ considering the circumstances”.
