The Blues will have two more chances to win their first preseason game following a 5-3 loss to Dallas on Tuesday night that dropped them to 0-3-1 in four exhibitions.
Dylan Holloway (twice) and Philip Broberg scored for the Blues, and Joel Hofer made 25 saves in his first complete game of the preseason. Ilya Lyubushkin, Wyatt Johnston, Radek Faksa, Tyler Seguin and Jason Robertson (empty-net) scored for the Stars.
The Blues will host the Senators on Thursday night before finishing the preseason in Chicago on Saturday night.
Offer Sheet Boys on the board
Holloway and Broberg each scored on Tuesday night, their first goals of the preseason.
Holloway scored in the first period, whipping a shot from the slot past Stars goaltender Casey DeSmith. Pius Suter won a faceoff, allowing Jordan Kyrou to control the puck along the boards, and freeing up soft ice for Holloway above the circle.
Holloway scored his second of the night in the third period with 6:53 remaining in the game, executing a give-and-go with Kyrou to score off the rush and cut the Dallas lead to 4-3.
Tuesday was the first night that Holloway, Suter and Kyrou played on the same line together. They’ve practiced together for the last week, and could begin the season together as the Blues’ second line.
Broberg’s goal in the second period tied the game at 2, and he snuck down the wall after a won faceoff by Dalibor Dvorsky and finished at the net with a wraparound inside the far post.
Both Holloway and Broberg are entering the final years of their contracts, and are scheduled to be restricted free agents in the summer.
Loof’s unlucky skate
Blues defenseman Leo Loof was involved in a pair of Stars goals, as both Llya Lyubushkin’s first-period goal and Radek Faksa’s second-period goal caromed off his skate and into the net.
Lyubushkin’s goal came after Tyler Seguin won a battle with Hunter Skinner to recover a puck below the goalline and then recycled it to the point. Seguin eventually set up Lyubushkin for a shot that deflected off Loof’s skate.
In the second period, Faksa appeared to whiff on a shot, leaving it to drag along the ice and find Loof’s skate once again. Faksa, the former Blues center, signed back in Dallas during the summer, inking a three-year contract with the Stars.
Loof’s skate did give back in the third period, when Nick Bjugstad’s clearing attempt went off his skate and out of play. The play was originally called delay of game, but no penalty was called after a Blues challenge of the call.
Loof is expected to play with AHL affiliate Springfield this season.
