With the festive season starting in full swing there are all the more reasons to celebrate this time as two big films are releasing on the same day this Dussehra. On one side we have Varun Dhawan and Janhvi Kapoor’s upcoming family entertainer Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari. And on the other side there is Rishab Shetty’s much-awaited Kantara: Chapter 1. Since the film is coming on 2nd October which is both Dussehra and Gandhi Jayanti it will be a public holiday which means an exciting showdown.
However this double dhamka has also invited some challenges for them. Single-screen theatres will struggle to allocate enough shows for both films. Addressing the potential clash Varun Dhawan said “Our date which we were coming on got moved due to many reasons. We were trying to get the best film we could. We made our best film.”
Varun Dhawan on the box office clash
He also recalled previous clashes between Gadar and Lagan and highlighted that it was not harmful. Besides this even ‘Gadar 2’ and ‘OMG 2’ were released together. He said Logon ko acchi film doge toh they will watch. We are not that big a size as ‘Kantaara’ so we don’t even need to do that kind of business. That’s another kind of film we are proud of it. We should support each other.”
Janhvi Kapoors views on the cinematic clash
Janhvi Kapoor too expressed similar views she said “It should be like ‘Barbie’ and ‘Oppenheimer’. Like he said it’s a much bigger film at a bigger budget and we are just a family entertainer.”
Shashank Khaitan on building more theaters
Director Shashank Khaitan also weighed in explaining the practical side of multiple releases. He stated “Also we are making so many films. How is it possible to release only one film in one week? With that philosophy we would only be able to release 52 movies a year.” He further said that while some suggest building more theatres the bigger question is at what price points they would operate.
While everywhere on social media there have been constant comparisons between the two films for their potential box office earnings. Varun has clarified “We are not a big film like ‘Kantaara’. Nor are we under the delusion of that.”
With both films targeting a festival audience it remains to be seen how viewers divide their time and money.
