The Los Angeles Angels are moving on from Ron Washington as the team’s manager, according to The Athletic’s Sam Blum. Ray Montgomery will also not be retained.
Washington started the season as the Angels manager, but stepped down due to health concerns. Montgomery stepped into the manager’s role in Washington’s absence. Washington had quadruple bypass surgery, but made it clear when he returned to be with the team that he wanted to manage the Angels next season.
“I miss baseball, this is my life,” Washington said in August, per Blum. “And if (Angels GM) Perry (Minasian) will have me back, I certainly want to come back and finish what we started.”

However, Washington will not be managing the Angels next year. He has noted he is healthy and ready to manage, so he could be a candidate elsewhere. Washington has managed for 10 seasons and is regarded as one of the best infield coaches of all time.
He was a long-time coach for the Athletics before he became the manager of the Texas Rangers from 2007-2014. He returned to the Athletics as a coach before joining the Atlanta Braves coaching staff. Washington won back-to-back American League pennants for the Rangers in 2010 and 2011.
Washington was unable to get the Angels into the postseason, but he could get another chance elsewhere. The San Francisco Giants, Texas Rangers and Minnesota Twins could all be landing spots for Washington.
