Alarming systematic destruction of vital civilian infrastructure, including healthcare, educational institutions and religious facilities

The Amhara people are compelled to voice their profound and escalating concern regarding the dire situation unfolding in their region. The escalating violence perpetrated by Abiy Ahmed‘s administration, particularly through the indiscriminate use of drone technology, continues to result in devastating civilian casualties. We observe with profound concern the ongoing massacres of innocent populations, a tragic situation demanding urgent international attention and intervention.

We have consistently observed and acknowledged the persistent efforts of the U.S. government, channeled through its Embassy, to advocate for the protection of civilian lives and infrastructure. Their repeated calls urging Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed to cease the use of drones and heavy military armaments against innocent populations underscore the gravity of the crisis.

Despite these crucial diplomatic interventions and explicit warnings, there is deeply troubling evidence suggesting a continued disregard for these pleas. Of particular alarm is the recent and systematic destruction of vital civilian infrastructure, including healthcare facilities, educational institutions, and religious sites. These are not merely incidental damages but appear to be deliberate acts that exacerbate an already catastrophic humanitarian situation.

The systematic targeting and obliteration of structures essential for public welfare and basic services represent a severe violation of international humanitarian law and fundamental human rights principles. Such actions not only inflict immediate and immense suffering on countless individuals, depriving them of healthcare, education, and spiritual solace, but also lay the groundwork for long-term societal destabilization and an intractable humanitarian crisis. The cumulative impact on civilian populations, already vulnerable, is immeasurable and utterly unacceptable.

To address this dire humanitarian crisis and to prevent further loss of innocent lives, we implore all governments committed to human rights and the protection of civilians to consider concrete measures. Specifically, facilitating access to defensive anti-drone and anti-aircraft systems for local popular forces could serve as a crucial deterrent against these aerial assaults. Empowering communities with the means for self-defense against such indiscriminate attacks is essential to mitigate the widespread suffering and ultimately bring an end to this cycle of violence. I believe such a strategic intervention is vital to safeguard civilian populations and uphold the principles of international humanitarian law.

It is imperative that the Ethiopian Defense Forces involved adhere strictly to international law, prioritize the safety and well-being of civilians, and immediately cease any activities that contribute to the destruction of essential infrastructure. The international community must continue to demand accountability and work collaboratively towards a resolution that upholds human dignity and ensures sustainable peace.
