Browns Share Promising Injury Update on Deshaun Watson

Sitting at 1-3 on the season, the Cleveland Browns are at a crossroads at the quarterback position heading into their Week 5 matchup against the Minnesota Vikings in London. And soon, another quarterback could enter the fold.

Veteran quarterback Joe Flacco has had some significant struggles to start the 2025 season, throwing six interceptions thus far on the year, which is second to only Las Vegas Raiders starter Geno Smith.

This has led to many calling for either of the two Browns rookie quarterbacks on the roster, Dillon Gabriel or Shedeur Sanders, to potentially see an opportunity to start for the organization.

But perhaps down the road, we could see the Browns turn back to former Pro Bowler Deshaun Watson, who continues to rehab from multiple surgeries to repair a torn Achilles injury that originally happened in Week 7 of the 2024 season.

Watson is still not ready to return from the injury and has not returned to practice yet for the team. But interestingly, Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski insinuated that Watson could be cleared to return sooner rather than later, explaining that Watson is “doing a great job” in his rehab process to return for the Browns.

“Deshaun’s doing a great job with his rehab, and that’s really where his focus is,” Stefanski said, via Pro Football Talk.

Stefanski’s comments certainly don’t lend any real timeline as to when we could see Watson healthy enough to play. But when he is, there may very well be a path to Watson seeing the field for the Browns.

Watson’s tenure in Cleveland thus far hasn’t gone to plan in any way, starting just 19 games over the last three seasons, which is due to both inconsistent play and problems with injuries.

But given the struggles of Flacco and the inexperience of both Gabriel and Sanders, it sure seems like it’s at least a possibility for Watson to get a chance to see the field at some point in 2025.
