More than 70 killed in attack by Sudan paramilitary in al-Fashir

More than 70 people were killed when Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces carried out a drone strike on a mosque in al-Fashir, the capital of North Darfur state, during prayers, the country’s Sovereignty Council said on Friday.

The attack comes amid the latest bout of violence in a civil war entering its third year between the Sudanese army and RSF.

The UN Human Rights office says Sudan has seen a significant rise in civilian killings with at least 3,384 civilians killed between January and June, mostly in Darfur.

The conflict between Sudanesse Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has unleashed waves of ethnically-driven killings that created what has been described by the UN as the worst humanitarian crisis.

Throughout the war, casualty numbers have been hard to track because of the collapse of local health services, fighting, and communication breakdowns, among other reasons.
