New chapter for Age Concern, new community hub

Age Concern Fuengirola, Mijas & Benalmadena are undergoing a transformative phase, opening a new chapter in their history, and closing their Los Boliches charity shop to prioritise a new community centre.

Parking was an issue, as well as a new contract on the old premises and a rent hike. It was simply time to plough resources into a new and better community hub. All the stock from the Age Concern shop in Benalmadena, has now been transferred to Age Concern Estepona.

Announced at the annual general meeting, the decision stems from rising operational costs, declining foot traffic, fewer donations, and online competition. The shop, a key revenue source for nearly a decade, will give way to the new social centre soon to open, offering wellbeing activities, first aid and CPR workshops, and dementia awareness classes, inviting residents into a warm, inclusive environment for social connection and community-driven leisure activities.

President Linda Ewen highlighted the charity’s growth to over 300 members but said there had been a decline in volunteers, particularly post-Brexit. The new centre will strengthen their mission to support older adults by creating fresh volunteer opportunities and delivering services specific to local needs. There will also be a new drop-in centre in Mijas Pueblo, which is planned for opening in November, with details forthcoming. Watch this space for upcoming information.

To further community health, Age Concern has partnered with the Save a Life (S.A.L.) campaign for a Masquerade Gala Dinner on October 31 at El Chaparral Golf, Mijas. Tickets, priced at €55, include cava, canapés, a three-course dinner, drinks, and live entertainment by Tony Whitehouse and Liam Grey. Funds will support defibrillator purchases for S.A.L., their registration on OpenAEDMap, and free CPR and first aid training.
