A well-known British food critic has given her verdict on McDonald’s in Spain after sampling the menu for the first time. While many of us are keen to sample local delicacies when we travel, it’s also intriguing to see how our favourite fast food restaurants adapt their offerings to cater to different tastes around the globe. The look and feel of McDonald’s outlets can vary greatly from one location to another, as can the menu. The Spanish McDonald’s menu is a far cry from what we’re used to in the UK, boasting unique items such as an Eggs Benedict sandwich, a McFish served with just ketchup, and breakfast options like potato tortilla sandwiches and toast topped with jamón ibérico. Becca, 28, who goes by the name ‘Becca Eats Everything’ on TikTok and boasts over 500K followers, decided to put the Spanish McDonald’s menu to the test. She rated 18 items that you won’t find on a UK McDonald’s menu. At the bottom of her leaderboard was a square-shaped burger priced at €7.50 [£6.55], the Chicken and Cheese Burger topped with bacon pieces. Becca commented: “There’s quite a strong mustard-y flavour and the quality of the chicken patty, I’d say it’s like a worse McNugget. It’s also quite dry.” She gave it a lowly rating of 2.5/10. She also sampled the Topped Fries with Cheese and Bacon for €4.95 [£4.33]. Becca gave her frank assessment: “McDonald’s fries are typically floppy and I think for this to work it needs crispier chips…that’s a three out of 10.” From the budget end of the menu, there’s a McSaver Chicken Barbeque and Cheese burger for €1.75 [£1.53]. Becca placed it at number 16 on her rankings as she declared she is “really not a fan of this cheap chicken”. She awarded it a score of 3.5/10. She also sampled “some bizarre looking things” called Chicken Pops, which she described as parched and lacking in taste, earning the snacks a 4/10. Becca was utterly stunned to discover a McExtreme Pulled Pork Burger on the menu. At €9.50 [£8.30], it boasts a hefty bun loaded with bacon, pulled pork and smoked cheese. Becca commented: “It’s not bad. That cheese on the bottom is very smokey and quite salty. There is some sort of maple leaf flavour that is quite pungent.” She awarded it a score of 5/10. One item that Becca claimed she was most eager to sample was the McExtreme Dip In Cheeseburger. Becca described: “So, you get a pot of cheese sauce and in here [the burger bun] we have got a burger sauce, two rashers of cheese, and then bacon on the bottom.” Becca was initially thrilled with the burger, describing it as “absolutely amazing”. However, her enthusiasm waned after she dipped it into the cheese sauce. She lamented: “Oh no, what is the appeal? It tastes like cheesy butter. An awful consistency. So shiny.” She gave the item a middling score of 5/10. The Chicken Caesar Salad, priced at €7.67 [£6.70], landed in 12th place with a similar rating of 5/10. The White Chocolate Sundae for €3.75 [£3.28] fared slightly better, securing 11th place with a score of 6/10. Becca praised the ice cream’s “liked the ice cream and the consistency is good and creamy” consistency but wished the white chocolate sauce wasn’t just on top. Top 10 The McExtreme Bacon Burger, costing €9.10 [£7.95], clinched the 10th spot. “It just tastes like a bacon and cheese burger…it is what it is, it’s alright,” Becca commented, giving it a 6/10. One menu item that stirred up some nostalgia for Becca was the McShaker Fries with Sour Cream. She explained: “This is such an interesting concept, so you have your fries in the bag and then you pour in this sour cream mixture and you shake. It feels like something from the ’90s.” She admitted she “doesn’t mind” the product, comparing it to Sour Cream and Onion Pringles, and awarded the fries a respectable 7/10. The Honey and Mustard Salad for €8.07 [£7.05] took 8th place, also scoring a 7/10. Meanwhile, the Chicken Wings for €3.07 [£2.68] flew into 7th place, with Becca praising them as “pretty good” and noting: “The chicken is tender.” In sixth place, Becca sampled the Spicy Wedges with Cheese and Bacon for €4.95 [£4.33]. After her first bite, she exclaimed: “Ooo, see that works,” adding, “They’re slightly spiced with paprika…can we please have these in McDonald’s [UK]. I would order them every single time.” She awarded the wedges a solid 8.5/10. Next up, at number five, were the Camembert Bites, setting Becca back €4.60 [£4.02]. She praised: “They are good, really creamy, love the crunch.” before scoring them an impressive 9/10. The fourth spot was claimed by the “messy looking” McCrispy Bacon and Barbecue Burger, priced at €8.12 [£7.09], which Becca said would be welcome on the UK menu. Becca commented: “It is really smoky on the tongue, I like the chicken…these sort of egg-washed brioche rolls are fantastic. Why do we not have this? This would be an excellent edition.” Moving onto the top three, the bronze medal went to the Deluxe Fries for €4.90 [£4.28]. Becca declared: “They’re delicious. The potato is creamy, lightly spiced.” and gave the fries a high rating of 9.5/10. The silver medal was awarded to the Chips Ahoy McFlurry for €4.30 [£3.76]. Becca explained: “You can get this with three different types of sauce, you can get milk chocolate, white chocolate or even caramel – I went for the caramel.” After tasting it, she said: “This is insane compared to ours. Wow.” Her rating? A whopping 9.5/10. Finally, the gold medal and top spot went to the Pistachio McFlurry for €4.30 [£3.76]. Becca was clearly impressed, exclaiming: “Oh my gosh, that pistachio flavour is good. Wow.” She also gave it a top rating of 9.5/10. One person shared their experience, stating: “Had a Spanish McDonald’s the other week when coming back from Salou, flying from Barcelona, can’t remember exactly what I had but was better then anything iv had in the UK, the range on their menu is far better then the UK’s too. “Spanish McDonald’s beats your British one any day,” declared another. A local chimed in with agreement: “We have the best McDonald’s in Spain, “I would order anything in the top 6,” another fan of the Spanish fast-food chain insisted. “The McShaker fries are insanely good.” Another reminisced about a memorable meal: “I had a Maccies in Benidorm a few years back and the burger had a fried egg with a runny yolk in it and I still think about it to this day.”
