Hyderabad’s newly appointed Police Commissioner, V.C. Sajjanar, on Tuesday outlined “people welfare policing” as the central focus of his tenure, stressing citizen safety, traffic management, cybercrime prevention, women and child protection, and police welfare as his top priorities.
Taking charge at the Integrated Command and Control Centre in Banjara Hills, he said that law and order, road safety and the adoption of AI-based tools would form the backbone of his approach.
“Traffic problems in the city are becoming more complex every day. With GST reduction, the number of vehicles increased. We will set long-term goals to resolve traffic issues and save citizens’ valuable time on the roads,” he said.
Special attention will be paid to drunk-and-drive cases. “Those driving under the influence are like moving suicide bombs on our roads. Such acts will not be tolerated,” he added.
On the menace of drugs, he said that cases would be pursued and that those fuelling the trade would face strict legal action. The Hyderabad Narcotics Enforcement Wing (H-NEW) team will be strengthened further, while awareness campaigns such as “Say No to Drugs” will be intensified across Hyderabad.
He raised concern over the rising tide of cybercrime, highlighting scams such as digital arrests and stock market frauds that have left many senior citizens vulnerable. To counter this, he said awareness programmes would be taken to neighbourhoods, apartments and bastis, ensuring that citizens are alert to new threats.
Food adulteration, which he described as a “serious health hazard”, would be tackled through uncompromising legal measures against offenders. He also made clear that crimes against women and children would be dealt sternly.
He also underscored Hyderabad’s reputation as a city of harmony and inclusivity, vowing to uphold and strengthen its Ganga Jamuni Tehzeeb. He pledged round-the-clock citizen services, adding that the welfare of police personnel would also be given high importance, with exceptional service duly recognised and rewarded.
Senior officials including P. Vishwa Prasad, Additional Commissioner (Crime), D. Joel Davis, Joint Commissioner (Traffic), and Parimala Hana Nutan, Joint Commissioner (Administration), along with all DCPs of Hyderabad, were present at the event.
