What was that “suspicious” package? Syracuse police used a small drone and a robot to investigate a suspicious box found strapped to a tree near City Hall on Monday, closing nearby streets and evacuating City Hall. So, what did the box turn out to be? It was a noise monitoring device related to the Interstate 81 project, officials said. A contractor for the state Department of Transportation installed the monitoring device, which consists of a microphone duct-taped to a box, last Thursday, Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh said. So, what caused the confusion and the evacuation?

The lawyer for corrections officer Rohail Khan argued that the beaten inmate wasn’t actually vulnerable because he wasn’t physically restrained at the time. “Wow,” was the response from Chief U.S. District Judge Brenda Sannes, who noted that the inmate was awakened at 1 a.m., ordered to stand against a wall and beaten by three correctional officers. Sannes sentenced Khan to prison.
