Five Bangladeshi Students Suspended From NIT Silchar After Campus Fight

Five Bangladeshi students at the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Silchar have been suspended for their involvement in a fight with senior students from Bangladesh on campus. The third-year students were also found in possession of illegal drugs.
Professor Dilip Kumar Baidya, Director of NIT Silchar, confirmed that the incident occurred on the night of September 8. An inquiry by the institute’s Disciplinary Committee found the students guilty.
As a result, the committee has suspended the students from classes for two semesters, from July to December and from January to June, effective immediately, according to Prof Baidya.
The students have also been removed from hostel accommodation. The discovery of illegal drugs has further raised concerns, the director stated.
The students are Sk Shahriar Ahmed Akash, Shimantor Ghosh, Saumyajit Paul, Sazzad Hossain Rafi, and Md Nur Hossain.

“We have enough evidence showing their involvement in the violence. They are not allowed to continue their studies here and must leave the institute,” he added.
Officials from the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), who provided scholarships to these students, visited the campus to speak with them.
The suspension order has been sent to Cachar Police, the ICCR’s Guwahati office, and other authorities. The students have also been removed from their hostel accommodation. The discovery of illegal drugs has heightened concerns, according to the director.

Earlier this year, an assistant professor at NIT Silchar was suspended after being accused of sexual harassment by a first-year student. The student from the Electrical Engineering department alleged that Professor Koteswara Raju Dhenukonda molested her in his chamber on March 20. She claimed he had called her to discuss her academic performance and, under the pretense of questioning her low marks, inappropriately touched her. Raju had previously faced similar allegations. In 2021, another student accused him of sexual harassment, but a local court exonerated him due to lack of evidence and the complainant’s absence during the proceedings.
