Doha, October 21 (QNA) - Qatar Chamber hosted Tuesday the "9th Islamic Financial Institutions and Banks Conference and Award for Partnership and Social Responsibility 2025," organized by the Regional Network Consultancy, a member of the Regional Network for Social Responsibility, in partnership with the Qatar Chamber and the Union of Arab Banks. Held under the theme "Sustainability Governance in the Islamic Financial Sector: From Commitment to Impact," the event brought together a distinguished group of economic experts and banking leaders from the State of Qatar and several Arab countries. HE Honourary President of the Conference, International Ambassador for Social Responsibility in Qatar, and Vice Chairman of the Qatar International Centre for Conciliation and Arbitration Sheikh Dr. Thani bin Ali Al-Thani affirmed that the conference represents a leading platform that brings together thought leaders in the field of Islamic financial institutions and banks. He emphasized that Islamic finance supports the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), as it is founded on the principles of justice, participation, and the prevention of harm - values that align closely with the essence of sustainability and a responsible economy. He also highlighted Qatar's steadfast efforts in fostering a culture of sustainability and its ongoing support for initiatives that strengthen governance and responsibility in the financial sector, in addition to the prominent role played by Qatari financial institutions and Islamic banks in advancing these objectives For his part, Acting General Manager of Qatar Chamber Ali Bu Sherbak Al Mansori said that that the conference highlights best practices in the Islamic economy and underscores the pivotal role of Islamic financial institutions in supporting the transition towards a sustainable economy that achieves comprehensive development. He stressed the Chamber’s commitment to supporting initiatives that aim to promote both economic and social growth. In turn, President of the Conference and International Ambassador for Social Responsibility in Qatar Dr. Mohammed bin Saif Al Kuwari said that the conference comes at a time when the financial sector is witnessing a growing shift towards sustainability governance, moving from formal compliance to adopting institutional practices that embody responsibility and sustainability. He noted that banks represent a leading model in this regard, combining ethical commitment with economic returns, and play a vital role in driving sustainable development. He also praised the fruitful partnership with Qatar Chamber and its active role in supporting initiatives that enhance governance and sustainability in the business environment. The conference addressed several key topics related to governance and sustainability in Islamic finance, highlighting its significance and approach to sustainability and social responsibility. Discussions covered the evolution of Sharia compliance into comprehensive impact governance within Islamic financial institutions, as well as the role of Sharia supervisory boards in promoting governance and sustainability. Speakers also examined how Islamic financial institution administrations can strengthen environmental, social, and governance (ESG) practices, along with mechanisms for institutional governance, relevant international and Islamic standards, the challenges of aligning Islamic principles with global frameworks, and the role of digital transformation in advancing sustainability governance. During the event, Qatar Chamber was honored with the International Award for Excellence in Partnership and Social Responsibility in the Economic Institutions category. Several other institutions and individuals also received the Financial Institutions and Islamic Banks Award for Partnership and Scientific Competence. (QNA)
