A nine-year-old girl, identified as Amaiyra, died after jumping off the fourth floor of her school building in Jaipur on November 1. The Class IV student of Neerja Modi School died on the spot. Her parents told NDTV that their daughter had been facing bullying, teasing and abuse with sexual connotations, at school for months, but their complaints went unheard. A year ago, Amaiyra's mother, Shivani Meena, had recorded a WhatsApp audio of her daughter crying and pleading not to be sent to school. In the clip, she said: I don't want to go to school... don't send me. I would speak to the class teacher, I spoke to the class coordinator not once, but a number of times over the last one year, but they would either shrug me off or ignore me, NDTV quoted the mother as saying. Amaiyra's father, Vijay Meena, recalled an incident at a Parent-Teacher Meeting (PTM) where kids pointed at his daughter and another boy. When she hid behind him in embarrassment, Vijay raised the issue with the teacher. The teacher told me this is a coed school and Amaiyra must learn to talk to all children, even the boys, he said. CCTV footage from the classroom shows Amaiyra approaching her teacher twice before the incident where she climbed the railing and jumped. However, there is no audio in the video, which violates CBSE guidelines mandating sound recording in classroom surveillance. Her uncle Sahil raised concerns about safety measures at a school with over 5,000 students and six floors without grills or nets for safety. Jaipur's Deputy Commissioner of Police Rajarshi Raj Verma said they are verifying all details after taking statements from the parents. District Education Officer (Primary) Ramniwas Sharma also confirmed that his department will record the parents' statements in the presence of the police. The school authorities have not yet commented on the matter.
