8th Central Pay Commission update: In a matter of big news for central government employees of India the Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi approved the Terms of Reference of the 8th Central Pay Commission. The 8th Central Pay Commission will be a temporary body which will work on the issue of increasing salaries of Central government employees and payments to pensioners. The commission headed by Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai has been given 18 months to submit its report which means recommendations are expected around April 2027. However as per media reports central government employees and pensioners may have to wait to see the benefits of the 8th Pay Commission. Whats the update on 8th Central Pay Commission? As per a report carried by the Financial Express although the Centre has now approved the Terms of Reference (ToR) for the panel nearly ten months after announcing it the process ahead remains lengthy and it might start impacting salaries only by 2028. Why employees will have to wait for 8th Central Pay Commission salary hike? Based on past patterns where implementation of various pay commissions have been noted the implantation of 8th Central Pay Commission could take longer. As per media reports both the 6th and 7th Pay Commissions took between 22 and 28 months from ToR approval to Cabinet approval and rollout. Applying the same timeline the 8th Pay Commission’s recommendations are unlikely to take effect before early 2028 even if the process stays on track. Details on 8th Central Pay Commission The Commission will comprise one Chairperson; one Member (part-time) and one Member-Secretary. It will make its recommendations within 18 months of the date of its constitution. Notably the Central pay commissions are periodically constituted to go into various issues of emoluments structure retirement benefits and other service conditions of Central Government employees and to make recommendations on the changes required thereon.
