Rishab Shetty’s Kantara took the audience by surprise. It was deeply mythical, rooted in Tulunadu’s culture and offered a spectacular theatrical experience. Three years later, the actor-director is gearing up for the release of Kantara’s prequel. Titled Kantara Chapter 1, it is set before the events of the 2022 Kannada thriller. The trailer of Kantara Chapter 1 will be releasing tomorrow (September 22). Ahead of it, here are 8 things to know about the prequel and what makes the film highly anticipated. Budget Kantara was made on a budget of Rs 16 crore. After its success, the makers reportedly increased the budget to Rs 125 crores for the prequel. 2. Shot For IMAX According to the Director of Photography, Arvind Kashyap, several key portions of Kantara Chapter 1 are specifically shot for IMAX and PXL formats. 3. Multilingual In 2022, Kantara released in Kannada, Telugu, Malayalam, Tamil and Hindi. The prequel will be releasing in Kannada, Hindi, Telugu, Malayalam, Tamil, Bengali, English and Spanish. 4. Digital Rights According to reports, Kantara Chapter 1 has sold its digital rights to Amazon Prime for Rs 125 crore. The OTT release date is yet to be locked. 5. Production Value A huge 200 by 200 feet set was erected in Kundapura, a coastal town situated in the Udupi district. Hollywood Stunt director Todor Lazarov was roped in for the extensive action sequences. Rishab has performed the stunts without a body double. 6. Plot Kantara: Chapter 1 is set in the Kadamba period in Karnataka. The Kadambas were significant rulers of parts of Karnataka and played a major role in shaping the architecture and culture of the region. The Kadamba period is considered a golden era in Indian history, known for its opulence and mesmerising beauty. 7. New Cast Gulshan Devaiah has joined Kantara Chapter 1 as King Kulashekara. Rukmini Vasanth will feature as Kanakavathi, the female lead. Reportedly, Mohanlal and Jayaram are also a part of the film. 8. Naga Sadhu Tale Kantara celebrated and put Bhola Kola on the global map. The prequel is said to be orbiting around Rishab’s Naga Sadhu, who possesses superhuman powers. Scheduled to release in theatres on October 2, Kantara Chapter 1 is backed by Hombale Films and directed by Rishab.
