8 Small Minnesota Cities Among the Best Places to Live in America

I live in a small town in Minnesota, and I absolutely love it. Some days it feels like I’m living in a real-life episode of Cheers, where, not only does everybody know your name at the local bar, but also at the local restaurant, Hy-vee, Kwik Trip, and anywhere else you go.

Of course, small-town life isn’t for everyone, so that’s where small cities come in with a few more amenities, jobs, and activities, but still keep that close-knit, easygoing vibe. And it turns out, Minnesota just scored big in a new national ranking of the best small cities in America, with several landing in the top 10 percent.
WalletHub compared more than 1,300 U.S. cities with populations between 25,000 and 100,000 to find where small-city life shines brightest. They looked at everything from affordability and economic health to education, safety, and overall quality of life. The result is a list that proves you don’t need skyscrapers or packed freeways to have it all.
As WalletHub analyst Chip Lupo put it, “Moving from a bustling metropolis to a small city could drastically cut down your cost of living. On top of that, the best small cities offer strong job markets, high-quality education, good health care, safe living conditions and plenty of local flair to help you achieve a high quality of life.”
These 8 Minnesota Small Cities Ranked Among the Best in America
Minnesota performed quite well in the new study. Eight Minnesota towns landed in the 90th percentile or better, meaning they’re among the top small cities in the country to call home.
Here’s a look at which small Minnesota cities made the list and what makes each one worth bragging about.
Lakeville, MN (97th Percentile)
Lakeville consistently ranks as one of Minnesota’s best places to live. With strong schools, family-friendly neighborhoods, and easy access to both the Twin Cities and outdoor recreation, Lakeville offers the best of both worlds. It’s safe, clean, and growing, but still feels like a small town.
Prior Lake, MN (97th Percentile)
This Scott County standout has a little bit of everything: a charming downtown, beautiful lakes, and a tight-knit community. Prior Lake’s strong economic health and quality schools helped secure its high ranking.
Cottage Grove, MN (97th Percentile)
Tucked along the Mississippi River, Cottage Grove scored high for affordability and education, plus it’s a great place for families who want more space without giving up access to Twin Cities amenities.
Shakopee, MN (96th Percentile)
The home of Valleyfair amusement park as well as the Canterbury Park races, Shakopee’s got entertainment covered. It’s also a solid choice for those seeking safety, strong schools, and a growing job market, all wrapped in a community with small-town charm and big-time energy.
Woodbury, MN (96th Percentile)
Woodbury often tops Minnesota “best places to live” lists, and it’s no surprise it landed here, too. With beautiful parks, top-tier schools, and endless shopping and dining options, this east metro suburb has a great mix of convenience and comfort.
