73 mobile phones worth ₹23.85 lakh stolen during Enrique Iglesias concert in Mumbai

MUMBAI: The city police have registered seven cases of mobile phone theft after at least 73 handsets, collectively worth ₹23.85 lakh, were stolen during global pop icon Enrique Iglesias’ live concert at the MMRDA Grounds in Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) on Wednesday evening. The concert, which marked the Grammy Award-winning singer’s debut performance in Mumbai, attracted a massive crowd of over 25,000 fans. Tickets for the event started at a minimum price of ₹7,000, and the venue was packed as Iglesias performed his timeless hits such as “Hero” and “Bailamos.” Multiple theft complaints filed According to Mumbai Police officials, seven First Information Reports (FIRs) have been registered across various police stations after concertgoers discovered their phones missing. The complainants include a makeup artist, hotelier, students, a journalist, and businessmen, who all reported similar incidents of theft during the show. An officer said the thefts likely occurred when the crowd surged towards the stage during popular performances. “We are examining CCTV footage from the event and nearby areas to identify the suspects. Teams are also checking with second-hand phone dealers and online marketplaces,” the officer added. Police probe underway Officials from the BKC Police Station confirmed that the total value of the stolen phones was estimated at ₹23.85 lakh, with many of them being high-end smartphones. Preliminary investigation suggests that a coordinated group may have operated at the venue, taking advantage of the large crowd and dim lighting conditions. A senior police officer said, “Concerts and large gatherings often attract pickpockets and organised theft groups. We have deployed teams to trace the stolen devices using IMEI numbers and are coordinating with mobile service providers to track their activity.” Fans left disappointed despite a stellar show Despite the unfortunate thefts, fans described the performance as electrifying and nostalgic. Enrique Iglesias performed for nearly 90 minutes, delivering back-to-back hits that kept the audience enthralled. His Mumbai setlist included chart-toppers like “Escape,” “Rhythm Divine,” and “Tonight (I’m Lovin’ You),” as he thanked fans for their “unforgettable energy.” One attendee, who lost his phone during the concert, said, “It was surreal to see Enrique perform live, but the thefts ruined the experience for many of us. People were pushing and crowding so much that it was impossible to keep track of our belongings.” Security concerns raised Several attendees have criticised the organisers for inadequate security and lack of crowd control measures. Many claimed that metal detectors and bag checks were rushed at entry points due to the overwhelming turnout. Police sources confirmed that the organisers have been asked to submit a report detailing the number of security personnel deployed and the arrangements made for crowd management. Officials added that more than 100 private security guards and Mumbai Police personnel had been stationed at the venue, but the large turnout may have exceeded the planned capacity. Investigation continues Police have assured the victims that efforts are underway to recover the stolen phones and nab the culprits. “We have registered seven FIRs under theft sections and are analysing digital evidence. People are advised to remain vigilant during large gatherings,” an official said. The incident has reignited concerns about safety and security at large-scale entertainment events in Mumbai, especially those drawing international performers.
