On a four-game losing streak and already 0-2 in River Ridge District play, the Blacksburg High School football team looked to the air attack to get back in the win column.
Production in that realm came from junior tight end Mack Strahm, who hauled in five receptions for 111 yards and accounted for all of Easton Holt’s passing yards to help lead the Bruins to a 43-0 rout of Hidden Valley at Bill Brown Stadium.
“It was huge, to get the momentum back. We lost four straight games that we thought we shouldn’t have lost. They were close games, difficult losses, so it was nice to have a big one and just get the momentum back. There are more district games that we need to win, so it’s exciting to have some momentum.”
For his performance, Strahm is the Week 7 Roanoke Times high school football player of the week. He beat out five other candidates in a reader poll, garnering 49.7% of the vote.
Strahm is the first tight end of the year to receive player-of-the-week honors and the second straight pass-catcher, joining Glenvar’s Cooper Mullins.
Get to know Strahm through seven questions we asked below.
Mack Strahm
Favorite sport other than football: Lacrosse
Favorite movie: “Old School” (2003)
If you could have any superpower, what would it be: Flight
Why do you wear No. 7 on your jersey: “When I was younger, I got No. 17 playing recreation lacrosse, because it was just whatever jersey fits you, and then as I got older and more into high school, I decided to maybe drop the 1 and make it a single-digit number. That’s just always been me since I was little.”
Dream vacation: The Rocky Mountains
Who is someone you look up to: “My dad. Being young, I think I asked a lot of questions and he always seemed to have the right answer. He’s actually by lacrosse coach here at school, and so I think just on and off the field I think I’ve always looked up to him and felt like he’s had the answers to my questions.”
What is the best thing to do in Blacksburg: “I think the best thing to do in Blacksburg is probably go to the New River. Fish, spend a day with your friends in the sun. Or, if you’re not an outdoorsy person, go to a Virginia Tech football game. I think there’s no atmosphere like it.”
