Food waste is costing local businesses money, which an upcoming event hopes to give back to bottom lines through education. According to BetterTable, which helps commercial kitchens reduce food waste, North Okanagan restuarants lose seven per cent of their food revenue each year, often without realizing it. Across Canada, wasted food costs over $10 billion annually and accounts for 10 per cent of climate change, according to BetterTable. To help food businesses boost profits, enhance sustainability and access grants, an online event is offered Nov. 5 at 2 p.m. by BetterTable and FoodMesh (both Regional District of North Okanagan ReThink Waste Grant recipients). Registrater at https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_0rDU7zQyRt6rqwcRUEFaGg for the free, 30-minute presentation and hear examples from local chefs seeing results. “North Okanagan restaurants have a major opportunity to strengthen their bottom line while making a positive impact in the community,” says Ben Liegey, founder and CEO at BetterTable. BetterTable helps hotels and restaurants waste less and earn more. Through technology, online training and on-site food audits, BetterTable equips culinary teams with practical tools for profitable and sustainable operations. “As a B.C. benefit company, our mission is to help commercial kitchens reduce food waste by 50 per cent and achieve Net Zero, one table at a time,” said Liegey.
