For some, Halloween is the best holiday of the year.
And why not? There is plenty of candy and frightening things, and here in St. Louis (when done right) you can even hear a few jokes.
The region is getting more into the Halloween spirit, so to speak, with each passing year. From simple games and treats for children to seriously sinister haunted houses, here are nearly 60 ways to enjoy All Hallow’s Eve and the month or so that precedes it.
Cobb Factory Haunted House

A whole family has been slaughtered, or so they say at this professional haunted house, so expect some blood-splattered victims to come after you. This year’s frightening locations include a mine, a cavern, a retreat, a waterfall and what they call the Morbid Blood Chamber.
Creepyworld Haunted House

The Darkness is the spooky dead grandfather St. Louis haunted houses; it is now in its 32nd year. Two floors of a Soulard building are decked out with animatronics and Hollywood movie effects, and a new experience called Butcher Shop. The horror retail store is also bigger this year.
The Hollows

Jack’s Lighted Trail

Part of Eckert’s Farm has been turned into a lighted trail, a Halloween version of Christmas standards such as the Missouri Botanical Garden’s Garden Glow. This one has monsters, a corn maze, a shipwreck and more, including live music. Food and drink are naturally available at the “spookeasy” and the cider shed.
Pirates and Pumpkins

It’s swashbuckling pirates and pumpkins, all in the same aquarium. Also, sharks. Sharks are scary, but the pirates will be friendly. There will be plenty of pumpkins, too, plus what they call their trick-or-treating extravaganza.
Nights at Height

Everybody loves huge displays of Christmas lights set to music, so the Lenhard family does it at Halloween. But it’s too big for a house, so they do it at a park. The music ranges from “Thriller” to a Halloween version of Bach’s Toccata and Fugue in D minor.
Fright Night

Fright at the Museum

Tim Burton’s animated stop-motion 1993 musical film combines the best of Halloween with Christmas. The coolest part is that it was filmed under black light, giving the film an eerie glow. And yes, we know it was actually directed by Henry Sellick, but it’s Burton’s picture all the way.

The streets will be closed and nearly three dozen Kirkwood businesses will be open for trick-or-treating, as well as any shopping that happens to occur. Kirkwood’s City Hall will also hand out candy from 4 to 5 p.m.

SLAM Underground — Gothic

The esteemed St. Louis Art Museum transforms into a Halloween playground for a night, with music, craft cocktails, Halloween-themed art making and an escape room (first come, first served, 20 minutes only and limited to eight people at a time).
Alton Halloween Parade

They say it’s one of the oldest Halloween parades in the country. They also say Alton is the most haunted small town in America, making this event a perfect confluence of frights. More than 40 organizations will be represented, with marching bands, floats and, quite possibly, candy.
Edwardsville/Glen Carbon Halloween Parade

Where: West, St. Louis and Main streets, Edwardsville

This Halloween parade has a theme: Foodie Friday: A Celebration of Your Favorite Eats. A whole bunch of civic groups will set out from Lincoln Middle School to celebrate that theme, and they will be judged in five categories including Fan Favorite.
