5 questions with Lions WR Dominic Lovett: Family bond and pregame rituals

ALLEN PARK — With the Detroit Lions boasting a crowded wide receiver room, Dominic Lovett understood his path to the 53-man roster would run through special teams.
Despite a limited showing during this year’s highly competitive training camp, the former Georgia Bulldog did enough to flash in the Week 3 preseason matchup against the Miami Dolphins. He caught two of his three targets and recovered a fumble on special teams, helping secure his spot.
As part of our weekly segment, MLive caught up with the Lions’ seventh-round pick from this year’s draft to get his thoughts on his new home, pregame rituals, and which NFL player he would have loved to line up against.
What’s the coolest or most unexpected thing you’ve learned about Detroit since being here?
I ain’t going to lie. Since being here, I ain’t really went out there much. I just been kind of locked in on football. But the city definitely loves their sports teams, and they show a lot of love.
Do you have any type of pre-game routine or superstition that you always go through before a game?
I call my mom and my pop just to hear their voice before I go out there on the field. They mainly just tell me, just have a good game and go out there, have fun.
It’s more important to me in life that before I go to bed, I text those two. When I wake up, I text them. I text ‘em throughout my day, just making sure that I’m keeping contact because being a football player, your schedule can be kind of hectic. So I just want to make sure that I always check in with them to see how their day going.
If you got control of the pre-game playlist, what’s the first song you’re playing and why?
Probably some Anthony Hamilton, “Can’t Let You Go.” I just really like that song for real. I kind of got an old soul, so I just like it. After that, probably some 50 Cent, “P.I.M.P.”
Away from football, do you have any hidden talents or things people would be surprised to know you’re good at?
I’m good at the video games. I can play any game. I play NBA2K and any story mode games like God of War, The Last of Us, games like that.
If there’s any defensive back, current or past, that you could line up against, who would it be and why?
Any DB? Probably the Honey Badger (Tyrann Mathieu). Just because he’s my size and I always respected his game knowing that he was kind of on the smaller end. But he played big, so I got much respect for him. Definitely.
