As the temperatures continue to drop, more households up and down the country will be spotting mould and damp spots in their homes due to excess moisture in the air. For those wondering which plants they need to go out and buy, TikTok user 'bloom.buddy.plant' has shared the five best common plants that 'naturally fight mould'. Typically found outdoors, the English ivy is an evergreen climbing plant that is able to significantly decrease airborne mould levels. The TikTok video states that this plant "naturally filters airborne mould particles and absorbs excess moisture." Studies have revealed that this plant can eliminate up to 78 per cent of airborne mould in just 12 hours. Especially beneficial in humid spaces like bathrooms, the English ivy is able to soak up moisture and capture mould spores from the atmosphere, quickly lessening mould infestations. Peace lilies are able to use their wide leaves as a natural air purifier, which can lower the humidity of a room to stop mould forming. Essentially, this plant flourishes when in moist conditions. The video added that peace lilies can "break down toxic mould spores while adding calming beauty to any space." However, it is crucial to remember that peace lilies are poisonous to cats as they can cause oral discomfort and pain when they bloom. While these symptoms can be short-term, it is advised that cat owners contact their vet if their cat comes in contact with the plant. Third on the list is the snake plant, which can soak up moisture and toxins from the atmosphere. On top of this, the plant can emit oxygen during the night to create a fresher home. Another added benefit highlighted by the TikTok post is that they "require minimal care and reduce humidity that leads to mould growth." However, homeowners should be wary not to overwater the snake plant as it could lead to soil mould developing. If this does happen, simply remove the mould and allow the soil to dry before watering again. Said to flourish in humid rooms that are susceptible to mildew and mould, the Boston fern is the perfect plant to have to your home. To enhance the plant's mould-fighting abilities, it is advised to sit them in bathrooms or damp areas with good air circulation, receiving indirect sunlight and regular watering.
