5 Front Range preps events to watch this week

Defending Class 4A football champ Broomfield may have a chance to lock up a league title with a win against undefeated Riverdale Ridge on Friday night. The Colorado Preps 4A No.3 Eagles (7-1, 3-0 4A North League 2) have clobbered their first three league opponents by an average margin of 51 points. But Week 9 will offer a much grander challenge as they go on the road to face the fifth-seeded Ravens (8-0, 3-0). Fairview, Broomfield, Monarch, Frederick all take step closer to league titles In their title defense this fall, the Eagles have been led offensively by running back revelation Kashus Clarvoe. He is not just having one of the best freshman campaigns in the state behind 4A’s biggest offensive line — but one of the best seasons by any running back in Colorado. Paying in Kash: Broomfield freshman RB Kashus Clarvoe dazzles in opening-night win over Frederick Clarvoe’s 1,231 rushing yards are the fourth-most in the state and his 14 TD are tied for sixth in the classification. In Week 8 — a 56-20 win over Grand Junction Central — he went for 265 yards on the ground and three scores. Let’s take a look at three preps events to watch this week. Our game of the week is Frederick at Monarch football on Thursday. Denver East at Boulder Valley School District field hockey; Wednesday at 4:15 p.m. The seventh-ranked Panthers (11-2-1) are closing in on their second postseason berth in as many years as they've been a varsity program. On Wednesday, they host No. 6 Denver East at Angevine Middle School in their regular-season finale. The Angels knocked BVSD out of the first round of the playoffs last year, 2-1. The sport's 16-team playoff bracket will be released on Friday. Centaurus at Silver Creek boys soccer; Thursday at 6 p.m. If Centaurus (8-5, 4-1 4A/3A Granite Peaks League) and Silver Creek (10-1-1, 5-0) both win later Tuesday night, they'll both have a chance at the league title in their matchup on Thursday. Silver Creek is soccer powerhouse in 2025 — Mead bore the brunt of it, and got better The Raptors came into the week ranked second in CHSAA's 4A postseason standings. The Warriors were sixth. Broomfield at Riverdale Ridge football; Friday at 7 p.m. Along with a chance to see Clarvoe, the matchup also features two very good young quarterbacks. In their first years starting, Broomfield's Matthew Merilatt has thrown for 1,128 yards and 12 scores (he's thrown for seven TDs and no interceptions in three league games), while Riverdale Ridge's Ricky Weeks has thrown for 1,101 and 20 TDs. Last year, Broomfield beat Riverdale Ridge 22-13 en route to both the 4A North 2 League and 4A state titles. Lutheran at Holy Family football; Friday at 7 p.m. Colorado Preps 3A No. 4 Holy Family (6-1, 2-0 3A Metro League) can tally a top-10 win and take control of its league with a win against No. 6 Lutheran (5-2, 2-0) in Week 9. Both the Tigers and Lions made quick work of their first two league opponents. Like, quick, quick. Holy Family won by a combined score of 109-0, while Lutheran's win total was 120-0. Last year, Lutheran grad Sawyer Wald rushed for 355 yards and five scores in the Lions' 42-35 victory. Through seven games this season, though, Holy Family has allowed 300 yards or more on the ground just twice. Over the past two weeks, the Tigers gave up 11 and 70 rushing yards respectively in blowout wins over Littleton and Kennedy. Softball state tournament at Aurora Sports Park; Friday and Saturday If 5A No. 1 Broomfield gets through its postseason bracket and touches gold, the Eagles will have gone undefeated in Colorado this season, winning their first state title in the sport. The Eagles face No. 16 Arapahoe Friday at 10 a.m. in 5A's opening round, while No. 4 Erie gets No. 13 Horizon. If both local teams win twice on Friday, they'll run into each other in the semifinals on Saturday. Five softball teams from Boulder, Broomfield counties advance out of regionals In 4A, Holy Family is going for its fifth state title and first since 2021. The Tigers face No. De'Evelyn at 12:15 p.m. Friday. A win there could send them into a potential second-round game against No. 6 Frederick, which starts with No. 11 Widefield. Lyons is the 10th seed in the 3A bracket and opens up on Friday at 12:15 against No. 7 Strasburg. The Lions beat the Indians, 9-7, in eight innings earlier in the month.
