49ers GM shares big Brock Purdy, Mac Jones updates for 'TNF' game at Rams

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan suggested on Monday that starting quarterback Brock Purdy re-aggravated a previous toe injury during the 26-21 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars that dropped the 49ers to 3-1 on the season this past Sunday.

During a Tuesday appearance on San Francisco Bay Area sports radio station KNBR, 49ers general manager John Lynch offered an update on Purdy’s status for the club’s upcoming “Thursday Night Football” game at the 3-1 Los Angeles Rams.

Brock Purdy may be a game-time decision for Rams contest

“We always look into everything for all of our players, so we will take every precaution to make sure that Brock’s alright,” Lynch explained, according to David Bonilla of 49ers WebZone. “I think he is. Now it’s just a matter of can he turn it around on a short week? …I think he’s listed as questionable, and I think it’s a true reflection of where he’s at right now.”

Purdy missed back-to-back games with the initial toe injury and then completed 22-of-38 passes for 309 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions against Jacksonville.

Primary backup Mac Jones connected on 26-of-39 pass attempts for 279 yards and three touchdowns in San Francisco’s 26-21 Week 2 victory over the New Orleans Saints. He then went 27-of-41 for 284 yards with a score and a pick as San Francisco earned a 16-15 Week 3 win over the Arizona Cardinals.

Will Mac Jones be good to go for Rams game?

Pro Football Talk’s Josh Alper noted that Jones aggravated a PCL injury on Sept. 21. However, Lynch indicated that Jones will be ready for action if Purdy can’t go against the Rams.

“Mac’s doing well,” Lynch added. “Mac’s been really good for us in every respect, and the way he’s going about his rehab with the knee situation that he’s been dealing with has been no different. He’s tireless in his work, so I think Mac’s in a good spot to back up or play if need be.”

As of early Tuesday afternoon, ESPN BET had the 49ers as 5.5-point road underdogs for Thursday’s game that will be held at SoFi Stadium. It could be interesting to see how that line changes, if at all, once the 49ers confirm the identity of their QB1 for that matchup.
