4 circumstances when Labour’s new digital ID will be used

Last month, Sir Keir Starmer announced a new digital ID scheme will be available to all UK citizens and legal residents. People won’t need to carry this ID on them and won’t be asked to produce it except for one specific situation; proving their Right to Work. It will be mandatory for people to share their digital ID when applying for a job that checks their Right to Work. Labour hopes to implement this requirement by the end of Parliament. It’s hoped that this will curb the prospect of work for people who are in the UK illegally. As well as saving time in processes that otherwise rely on paper records and copies of identity documents to complete these checks. Some other circumstances that the digital ID could be used: The ID will be contained within your phone, similar to the digital driving licence that the government has announced plans to introduce. Sir Keir Starmer said: “I know working people are worried about the level of illegal migration into this country. A secure border and controlled migration are reasonable demands, and this government is listening and delivering. “Digital ID is an enormous opportunity for the UK. It will make it tougher to work illegally in this country, making our borders more secure. “And it will also offer ordinary citizens countless benefits, like being able to prove your identity to access key services swiftly - rather than hunting around for an old utility bill. “We are doing the hard graft to deliver a fairer Britain for those who want to see change, not division. That is at the heart of our Plan for Change, which is focused on delivering for those who want to see their communities thrive again.” The Prime Minister assured that people won’t need the ID to get into hospital or receive public services as the Right to Work check will be the only mandatory place for it to be used. The proposed plans also included a note that it will be designed with inclusivity in mind for those that use assistive technologies, require physical alternatives or who cannot use digital technologies.
