LORCA hosted the 37th year of its Half Marathon recently, bringing around 700 runners to the city centre. The event, organised by the Asociación Deportiva Eliocroca with support from the local council, was once again a great success, showing how popular long-distance running has become in the area. Races for all levels of runners Participants could choose between the traditional 21km half marathon or the shorter 10km race, both of which started under clear November skies. The course wound through Lorca’s main streets, past some of the city’s best-known landmarks, creating an exciting route for runners and spectators. Crowds lined the streets, cheering on family, friends, and visiting athletes from across Spain and beyond. For many, the event was not only about competition but also about taking part in something that promotes health and community spirit. Several local clubs, schools, and fitness groups encouraged their members to join in, helping to spread a positive message about staying active. International winners and local talent The men’s half marathon was won by Moroccan runner Abdelmajid Elhissouf, finishing just one second ahead of fellow countryman Youness Bel Yamna after a tightly contested race. In the women’s category, Argentina’s María Kin took first place, showing impressive form and determination from start to finish. The 10km event also brought some local pride, with Lorca athlete Julio Alberto Ponce and Puerto Lumbreras boxer Mari Carmen Romero claiming victory. Both received warm applause from supporters, highlighting the region’s growing base of talented athletes. Community support and organisation Beyond the results, the event stood out for its excellent organisation and strong sense of community. Volunteers, local sports clubs, and families worked together to ensure a smooth and enjoyable race day. Refreshment stands, music, and safety checkpoints along the route added to the festive atmosphere. As one of the region’s best-known sporting events, the Lorca Half Marathon continues to highlight the city’s commitment to promoting sport, health, and wellness in the area. With growing participation each year, Lorca has firmly established itself as a key destination for runners in the Region of Murcia and beyond.
