Officials of Food Safety Department on Friday seized 355.6 kg of soanpapadi stocked without Food Safety Licence in a supermarket in Virudhunagar. Besides, the officials seized 50 kg of various nutritious products from a medical shop in Palayampatti that lacked food safety licence. A statement by the Virudhunagar district Food Safety Designated Officer, S. Mariappan, said that despite statements issued by the Collector through newspapers and conduct of awareness meetings by the officials of Food Safety Department, the traders had not followed the food safety rules. The action has been taken as such goods would affect the health of consumers. The statement said that manufacturing of food items or selling them without food safety licence under Food Safety and Standards Act 2006 would attract a fine of up to ₹10 lakh.
