34-year-old man dies by suicide after jumping from Bengaluru mall

Bengaluru: A 34-year-old man allegedly died by suicide after jumping from the third floor of GT Mall in Bengaluru on Monday morning, police said. The deceased has been identified as Sagar, an engineering dropout who, according to officials, had been undergoing treatment for psychological issues. Preliminary probe rules out foul play Police said the incident occurred around 10:15 a.m. when visitors and staff at the mall noticed Sagar climbing over the railing before falling to the ground floor atrium. Security personnel immediately alerted the Malleshwaram police, who rushed to the scene and shifted him to a nearby hospital. Doctors later declared him brought dead. A senior police officer confirmed that no foul play is suspected in the incident. “Based on CCTV footage and witness accounts, we can confirm that the man jumped on his own. It appears to be a case of suicide,” the officer said. The body was later shifted to Victoria Hospital for post-mortem examination, and further investigation is underway. Family reveals mental health struggles According to Sagar’s family members, he had been struggling with psychological problems for the past several years and was under medication. Police said he was unmarried and unemployed, and had been staying with his parents in north Bengaluru. “He had discontinued his engineering studies a few years ago and was facing mental health challenges. His family has told us that he had been undergoing regular psychiatric treatment,” the officer added. Police appeal for awareness on mental health Authorities have urged the public to remain aware and sensitive to mental health concerns. “It is crucial that family members and friends seek timely help for those showing signs of distress. There are several helplines and counselling services available,” the police said. Past incidents raise safety concerns This is not the first time such an incident has been reported in Bengaluru’s malls. Over the past year, city police have recorded a few similar cases involving individuals jumping from higher floors of commercial buildings. The incidents have raised questions about safety measures, including the need for higher railings and protective barriers in public spaces such as malls and metro stations. Mall authorities have said that the premises are equipped with security personnel and surveillance cameras, but they will review safety protocols following the incident. Help and support available Experts emphasise that suicide is preventable and that early psychological intervention can save lives. The Karnataka State Mental Health Authority (KSMHA) and several NGOs run 24×7 helplines for those experiencing mental distress. Investigation continues Malleshwaram police have registered a case of unnatural death and are awaiting the post-mortem report. They plan to record statements from eyewitnesses and family members to complete the investigation. The tragic incident has once again highlighted the urgent need for mental health awareness, early intervention, and adequate safety infrastructure in public spaces.
