It’s a little slower than usual at Netflix this week when it comes to new original shows and acquired series. This isn’t entirely unexpected, as even the No. 1 streamer in the world has to slow down the flood of content near the end of the year. Fortunately, there are still some intriguing additions, including a French period drama, an AMC original series and a historical miniseries that just launched. These are Watch With Us‘ picks for the three underrated Netflix shows I can’t wait to watch this weekend. ‘Nero the Assassin’ (2025) Nero the Assassin is a French period drama that stars Pio Marmaï as Nero, a hired killer who works for Nicolas de Rochemort (Louis-Do de Lencquesaing). For the most part, Nero kills without remorse, but he finally balks at an assignment given to him by a witch, La Borgne (Camille Razat), who has Nicolas’ ear. She wants Nero to murder a teenage girl, Perla (Lili-Rose Carlier Taboury). Perla isn’t just any girl — she’s Nero’s daughter, and she has never met her father before he took her from an orphanage and went on the run with her. Nero really doesn’t want to be a father, but he doesn’t really have a choice. He’ll also have to figure out why La Borgne wants his daughter dead. Nero the Assassin is streaming on Netflix. ‘Soulmates’ (2020) Bill Skarsgård may be scaring the heck out of viewers in It: Welcome to Derry, but he also showcases a more sensitive side in a single episode of Soulmates, a short-lived AMC series from 2020. In the near future, science has found a way to bring soulmates together through a special test. But it won’t work if the soulmate in question hasn’t also taken the test. If you thought this would make navigating romances any easier, then you’d be wrong. This anthology series focuses on a new cast in every episode, as they’re left to face some hard questions about who they want, and how far they’ll have to go to be placed with the person of their dreams. Some of the other actors featured on the show include Sarah Snook, Kingsley Ben-Adir, David Costabile, Georgina Campbell, Malin Åkerman and Charlie Heaton. Soulmates is streaming on Netflix. ‘Death by Lightning’ (2025) Nobody actually dies by lightning in Death by Lightning, and the title is more of a metaphor for how difficult it is to protect the President of the United States from any threats. This four-part miniseries explores the presidency of James A. Garfield (Michael Shannon), a man who is more famous for being assassinated in office than anything he did in life. Garfield’s presidency lasts only a few months, and the irony of his death is that the man who shot him, Charles J. Guiteau (Matthew Macfadyen), had at one point been one of his admirers. Guiteau’s story is linked to Garfield’s even before the fateful day that led to the latter’s demise. Nick Offerman also stars in the series as Vice President Chester A. Arthur, the man who has to pick up the pieces of Garfield’s administration. Death by Lightning is streaming on Netflix.
