3 Technical School Heads Sent On Administrative Leave Over Unauthorised Fee Collection

The principals of three technical institutions have been handed a one-month administrative leave over unauthorised fee collection and extortion. The Ghana TVET Services announced the disciplinary action on October 27 in a press statement citing credible reports of extortion. The affected institutions include Agona Swedru Technical Institute in the Central region, Sunyani Technical Institute in the Bono Region and Madina Technical Institute in the Greater Accra Region. They are accused of demanding admission charges, boarding protocol fees, payment for changing residential status from day to boarding, fashion practical items charges, bedsheet payments and PTA-related charges. “Such practices stand in violation of the Government’s Free TET policy and undermine the Service’s commitment to ensuring equitable access to technical and vocational education across the country.” “The Ghana TVET Services reiterates its zero-tolerance policy for corruption and extortion and all acts that compromise the integrity of the TVET system.” It further announced the establishment of an investigative committee to advise the Service on appropriate sanctions. The respective Regional Directors of the Service have been charged with assuming the responsibilities of these principals. Story by Hajara Fuseini
