3 questions after Buffalo Bills outlast New Orleans Saints

3 questions after Buffalo Bills outlast New Orleans Saints

1. What did we learn?
Not exactly a new lesson but more of a reminder – Josh Allen can still do it himself. His 27-yard run in the fourth quarter gave the Bills a spark, and he threw a touchdown to tight end Dalton Kincaid on the next play. A drive later, Allen ran for 15 yards on second-and-8 to push the Bills downfield in the eventual win. Allen started the game 5-of-5 passing for 103 yards and a touchdown. From there, the offense slowed a bit. But when the Bills needed to reignite, it was – as usual – Allen who did it for them.

It’s time to keep talking about the defense. The Bills’ defense wilted at times against the mediocre Saints. An interception by safety Cole Bishop on a bizarre trick play call from the Saints helped keep New Orleans out of the end zone, but it still was not the defense’s best day. In the first quarter, the Saints averaged 8.8 yards per play. That number eventually went down to 4.6 yards per play, but the Saints stayed in the game until midway through the fourth quarter. A dominant defense would have snuffed out the Saints sooner.
The Buffalo Bills were waiting … and waiting … and waiting for something good to happen Sunday against the New Orleans Saints at Highmark Stadium. It took a while, but ultimately, Josh Allen happened.
3. What happens next?
The Bills host the New England Patriots next week in Sunday Night Football, and the Patriots are coming off of a 42-13 dismantling of the Carolina Panthers. Buffalo will hope to have right tackle Spencer Brown back for that – the team missed him on Sunday, as Ryan Van Demark struggled at times. The Bills are 2-0 against the AFC East, and they’ll look to build on that against New England. Buffalo can use the next week to review and clean up penalties – the Bills were flagged 11 times for 55 yards.
