2025 WAFCONQ: Black Queens boycott training amid unpaid bonuses

Ghana’s senior women’s national team, the Black Queens, are threatening to boycott training and their upcoming match against Egypt due to unpaid bonuses from the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON). Each player is reportedly owed $9,500, stemming from their silver-medal run in Morocco, with the tournament concluding in July. Despite initial threats to skip the first leg of the 2026 WAFCON qualifier, the team played in Ismailia, following camp negotiations — but only received their per diems after the match. Second-Leg Preparations in Jeopardy Now back in Ghana ahead of the return leg on Tuesday, October 28, the Queens have refused to train or undergo physical sessions, demanding full payment before resuming official duties. “The players are reportedly frustrated with the treatment they have received from the Ministry of Sports and Recreation,” according to sources. The standoff threatens Ghana’s qualification hopes for the 2026 WAFCON, which also serves as a gateway to the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil. This crisis not only jeopardizes Ghana’s continental ambitions, but also raises broader concerns about institutional support for women’s football, athlete welfare, and the credibility of sports governance.
