2025 Transactions: Nido Re-Signs with Tigers, Gibaut & Schunk Become Free Agents

With the 2025 MLB postseason concluding on November 1, offseason business can begin to commence. But before then, some Major League teams made last-second moves during the 2025 World Series. The Tigers brought back Tomas Nido, Santiago Espinal was outrighted by the Reds, and a pair of Rockies elected free agency. Nido re-signed with Tigers The Tigers re-signed catcher Tomas Nido to a Minor League contract this past week. Nido played in 11 Major League games with the Tigers this past season. Nido first became a Tiger in September 2024 before he re-signed for the first time in January of this past year. The 31-year-old spent most of 2025 in Toledo (AAA), where he hit .209/.267/.331 (.598 OPS). He originally elected for free agency in October. Gilbreath & Schunk become free agents Speaking of players who elected free agency, infielder Aaron Schunk and relief pitcher Lucas Gilbreath both hit the open market after the Rockies outrighted them both to Triple-A. The 29-year-old Gilbreath missed all of 2023 recovering from elbow surgery and only made four Major League appearances between 2024 and 2024. Gilbreath’s velocity dipped significantly upon his return; originally a pitcher who was in the 93-94 MPH range, he only averaged 89 MPH at the MLB level this season. It sat roughly 90-91 MPH down in the Minors. Schunk, meanwhile, was a second-round pick back in 2019. He only slashed .222/.246/.302 in parts of two seasons (2024-25) with the big club in Colorado. The Reds outrighted infielder Santiago Espinal to Triple-A Louisville. Espinal played in 114 games last season with the Reds. He slashed .243/.292/.282 and didn’t hit a home run for the Reds across 328 plate appearances. Espinal received regular playing time for much of the year. However, the additions of new players, including Ke’Bryan Hayes, pushed him down the depth chart. He only played in four games during September. Additionally, Ian Gibaut elected free agency. The Reds outrighted Gibaut off the 40-man roster, and Gibaut was able to head to the market since he had more than three years of MLB experience.
