BMW’s M5 super-performance sedan went through some big changes for model year 2025. It now has a plug-in electric hybrid powertrain, with a model-specific version giving the car a rousing maximum output of 717 horsepower and peak torque of 738 pound feet. Maximum travel distance in electric-only mode is 25 miles.
The combination of a 4.4-liter V8 engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology and an electric motor, along with an eight-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic, and the M xDrive all-wheel-drive system, takes the M5 to a whole new level.
BMW calls the 2025 M5’s introduction “taking another step in the brand’s evolution toward electrification.”
The multitude of technical details about the M5’s sophisticated mechanicals are loaded with complexity, so I’m going to use my pretty little head to change the subject.
Bold new exterior styling strengthens the M5’s athletic, assertive impression, distinguishing it more noticeably from BMW’s 5 Series sedan.
The M5 interior is a showpiece of modern automotive design. In addition to the overall handsomeness, I discovered small elements of interest, items that didn’t have to be fancy but were. For example, the paddle shifters with their plus and minus indicators carved into the paddle. The sedan’s blue and red dash trim gorgeously reflects light like a prism.
Complication is the overarching characteristic of the 2025 M5 interior. There are seemingly hundreds of different settings for everything. I’ve outgrown most of my earlier impatience with non-intuitive systems, but this was on beyond zebra.
As expected from a luxury BMW, comfort, build quality, and ride quality earn sky-high marks.
There’s just one trim level of the 2025 M5, but it’s available in sedan and wagon body styles. Pricing starts at $123,275.
My tester came equipped with three optional packages: Driving Assistance, Carbon, and Executive, totaling $6,650. An M Driver’s Package ($2,500) raised the electronically-limited top speed from 155 mph to 190 mph. There wasn’t much use for the power boost on the public roads of Snohomish County, where I try to avoid getting arrested. But the package includes a one-day performance driving course, providing expert instruction at a BMW Performance Driving School. That, I could have used.
