KUCHING, Sept 17: Sarawak will welcome some 200 participants and guests from seven countries for the inaugural Sarawak International Open DanceSport Championship at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) on Sept 20.

Deputy Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Datuk Snowdan Lawan said the championship, organised by the Sarawak DanceSport Association (SDA) with recognition from the DanceSport Federation of Malaysia, has also gained support from the Ministry of Youth and Sports Malaysia and the Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Sarawak.

“We are expecting participants and guests from Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, and India.

“On the grand finale night, more than 300 spectators will be treated to dazzling performances across the Latin, Standard, and Breaking categories,” he told a press conference at the Ministry’s Office today.

In a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) news report, he added that the competition offers a total prize pool of RM30,000, including RM15,000 in cash vouchers, to be contested by participants in the open, adult, youth, junior, and children’s categories.

More than just a platform for competition, Snowdan emphasised, the event reflects Sarawak’s long-term commitment to strengthening sports tourism while providing international exposure for local talents.

“With the support of the Sarawak Sports Corporation and the Sarawak Sports Council, we are confident this event will not only raise the profile of DanceSport but also highlight the warmth of Sarawakians and the Olympic spirit of regional friendship,” he said.

He also extended appreciation to the SDA leadership under chairman Chester Lim Hian Thoong for their dedication in organising the championship. — DayakDaily
