PEMBROKE, N.C. (WBTV) – An elementary school student was suspended after a gun was found on them at school in Robeson County.
A press release from the Public Schools of Robeson County said the student attends Pembroke Elementary School.
According to the district, the weapon was discovered after a staff member pulled the student aside after observing an unusual object on the student’s side.
The district said the student was then separated from his class and contained after the staff member discovered that he had a gun on his waistband.
“We commend the swift action of the staff member and administration this morning at Pembroke Elementary School. As always, we encourage all students and staff to speak up or report any activity that seems suspicious,” said PSRC Chief Communications Officer Jessica Sealey. “We are grateful that the staff member trusted their instincts and acted quickly and professionally to ensure a safe environment for our students and staff.”
Officials said the child will face a 365-day suspension, and their name will not be released because of their age.
Law enforcement investigated, and the school day continued on a normal schedule.
No injuries were reported, according to the district.
