WEST ASHLEY, S.C. (WCSC) – The 16th annual Avondale 5K Run and Walk for Special Kids event is happening on Saturday with a focus on benefiting the Charles Webb Center.
Organizers say last year’s race brought in a record number of participants, with more than 500 people and raised nearly $50,000. This year, the organization looks to raise even more, with a target of $75,000.
The 2025 race will be held in honor of Dr. Heather Hall, a College of Charleston professor, who organizers say was known for her passion, kindness and unwavering commitment to her students. Dr. Hall also advocated for children with special needs through her work on the Development Foundation of CHS. Organizers say this year’s race will honor her memory by remembering her dedication to education, inclusion and service.
The Avondale 5K Run and Walk for Special Kids is happening Saturday morning, starting at Tall Oak Drive near Triangle Char and Bar at 828 Savannah Highway. Sign up and registration begin at 7 a.m., the race starts at 8 a.m. The after-party and awards are happening between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. Strollers and dogs are welcome.
The After Race Party starts after participants cross the finish line. Triangle Char and Bar is hosting the party with music, all-inclusive food and drinks.
The top winner will have the honor of their name being engraved on the prestigious “Stevie Award,” named after the late Stephen Condon, in whose memory the race was founded. All attendees and participants are asked to park in designated parking spaces and not on the race course.
Registration on the day of the event is $45 per person. Non-race participants can attend the party for $25. Click here to visit the event website and learn more about the event, as well as register to participate.
