15,000 tonnes of steel to be used in Saidapet-Teynampet elevated corridor: Highways Minister

A total of 15,000 tonnes of steel structures will be used in the 3.2-km, four-lane elevated corridor from Saidapet to Teynampet to be built at a cost of ₹621 crore, Highways and Public Works Minister E.V. Velu said on Tuesday. He was speaking to mediapersons after inspecting a manufacturing unit at Vadodara in Gujarat.

An official press release here said the Minister was inspecting the five locations in Hyderabad, Mumbai, Vadodara, and Gummidipoondi, where the various elements that would form the corridor’s steel components were being prefabricated. Mr. Velu said that the prefabrication would speed up the construction work. After completion, the elevated corridor is expected to cut down the travel time on this stretch from 40 minutes to just 10 minutes, the release added.

Piers (vertical load bearing structures that hold the deck and transfer the load to the foundation), pier-caps, and girders (beam that carries the deck slab) are being manufactured at these facilities under the supervision of engineers of the Highways Department and quality control experts. “This is considering the safety of motorists taking the corridor and the Metro Rail tunnels running below,” Mr. Velu said. “Since a major portion of the flyover goes above two tunnels, the soil stabilisation and design were whetted by experts from the Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay,” he added.

The foundation stone for the ambitious project, which will allow motorists to cross seven traffic junctions at Eldams Road, SIET College, Cenotaph Road, Nandanam, CIT Nagar Third and First Main Roads, and Todd Hunter Nagar-Jones Road, was laid in January 2024.
