10,000 palmyra trees to dot Pulicat Lake region in Tirupati

Sri City-based Kobelco Construction Equipment India Private Limited (KCEI) has launched a mega initiative to plant 10,000 palmyra trees across the Pulicat Lake region, in a bid to ensure sustainability, biodiversity and climate resilience in its vicinity.

The 120-year old Japanese steel major harped on the initiative on the occasion of the 15th anniversary of its Indian company.

Muneo Takahashi, Consul General of Japan in Chennai, planted the first sapling in the presence of Consul Naoko Yuzawa, Sri City founder-managing director Ravindra Sannareddy and Kobelco South East Asia managing director Kasamori and KCEI managing director Hayama.

Mr. Takahashi highlighted the company’s legacy of innovation and social responsibility, lauding its dual focus on industrial growth and environmental stewardship.

Mr. Sannareddy attributed the company’s success to Sri City’s ecosystem. “In Sri City, we don’t just build factories, we nurture ecosystems. The palmyra tree is not just heritage, it is climate resilience,” he said. He also gave a call to increase the trees from 10,000 to one lakh to prove that ‘industry and ecology can thrive together’.

Aarde Foundation’s trustee Xavier Benedik called palmyra a species vital to the northeast monsoon and explained the importance of reviving native trees to restore climate, culture and economy.
