“This is the thing I’ve wanted to risk talking about”: Drew Barrymore reveals she had a breast cancer scare after a “bad mammogram”

Drew Barrymore shared her personal experience with a breast cancer scare while talking to Tig Notaro, who was diagnosed with bilateral breast cancer in 2016 and underwent a double mastectomy. Notaro was a guest on The Drew Barrymore Show's November 3 episode, and her experience inspired the talk show host to share her own. Barrymore said:"This is the thing I've wanted to risk talking about on this show because I recently had a scare. I'm completely fine, but I did get a bad mammogram."Drew Barrymore explained that she got "taken into that room" and had to undergo an emergency biopsy because of the bad mammogram. Her experience also included the usual 5-day waiting time to get the result, which Notago described as "a long wait." However, Notaro's recent documentary, Come See Me in the Good Light, which they talked about earlier in the episode, gave her a chance to broach her breast cancer scare on air. "Your documentary is going to be groundbreaking": Drew Barrymore on Tig Notaro's latest projectCome See Me in the Good Light follows poets Andrea Gibson and her wife, Megan Falley, on their journey after the former was diagnosed with terminal ovarian cancer. Tig Notaro visited The Drew Barrymore Show to promote the documentary, which the talk show host said was going to be groundbreaking. Drew Barrymore told her guest for the episode:"Thank you, Tig, for opening this conversation so we can change the narrative on what's coming for all of us. That we can embrace it in a new way—your documentary is going to be groundbreaking and so important for people, and it's one of the most beautiful love stories I've ever seen in my life."Drew Barrymore at the Breakthrough Prize Awards 2025 (Image via Tayfun Coskun/Getty Images)She also further talked about what the documentary and seeing it had inspired her to do, like sharing her breast cancer scare with the public via her show. added that the warm reception Tig Notaro's recent project has gotten gave her "a little more confidence" to share her experience. She said: "Having seen your documentary, I feel like I might be able to start scratching the surface here because of what you guys were brave enough, bold enough, and smart enough to put out into the world."Drew Barrymore also asked Tig Notaro about her own cancer journey, which the latter described as an experience that "cracked me open." She asked the comedian how she calmed herself and made peace with the diagnosis, to which Notaro replied that it forces someone "to get over any sort of feeling that you can't ask for help" or pretend that they don't need anybody. She also encouraged people to do the same, to get over the fear of asking someone for help because "people want to help" and "do good," and it changed her life. Notaro had undergone a double mastectomy and chemoptherapy and has been in remission since 2013, per Entertainment Weekly.Come See Me in the Good Light comes out on November 14 on Apple TV+.
