“I hope it could be a source of strength” - Takeru out to inspire people struggling with mental illness through his performances

Japanese kickboxing icon Takeru Segawa has been transparent about dealing with mental health struggles in both his personal and professional life.Given his status as a martial arts superstar, ‘Natural Born Krusher’ wants to raise awareness about it and perhaps become a beacon of hope for those on the same boat.Takeru recently opened up about the stigma that comes with depression, especially in his native Japan. The 34-year-old, however, is using his platform to address the matter, especially for those suffering without support.Takeru shared in a ONE Championship interview:"There are actually a lot of people in Japan with the same illness, and they are suffering a lonely battle. I want to show them that even with this condition, one can compete in combat sports on the world stage and have results to show for it."The Team Vasileus leader continued:“Even now, when I'm not feeling well, I still get depressed sometimes. But I also want people to watch me overcome that. I hope it could be a source of strength for them, which is why I publicly disclosed my struggle with mental illnesses."Meanwhile, Takeru returns to the Circle at ONE 173 on Nov. 16 in Tokyo. The former three-division K-1 champion will face Denis Puric in a flyweight kickboxing clash at Ariake Arena.
