“I get death threats all the time” - Mets’ Ryne Stanek slams MLB’s gambling partnerships amid player safety concerns

New York Mets pitcher Ryne Stanek has called out the league for its connection to legalized betting. The veteran, in an exclusive interview with the NY Post published on Nov. 7, revealed he has received death threats and fears its implications for his family. While he noted how threats are part of their professional life, MLB’s inaction is compromising their safety. Gambling in sports has been a sore thumb for years, more so recently with the Cleveland Guardians pitchers Emmanuel Clase and Luis Ortiz’s involvement.“I get death threats all the time — every day," Ryne Stanek told the NY Post. It’s not anything that every baseball player doesn’t deal with all the time. Like, ‘You cost me my parlay, I hope your family dies.’”“Gambling in baseball is doing nothing but making the day-to-day lives of players substantially worse. It’s just people that recklessly bet their money on just anything that they can and if you mess up their bad life choice, you’re the problem and you should die.”Stanek added that the more the league doesn’t take serious action consequences will be severe. He noted how there are “enough crazy people” to actually take harmful action against a player or their loved ones.“The more it goes on, the more the league needs to figure something out because there’s enough crazy people out there that might do something, that you don’t want to have the league wait until the worst-case scenario happens to a player because of the gambling stuff,” Ryne Stanek said.“It’s a tough landscape now that players are dealing with because the teams are making so much money off [gambling] that they don’t want to fix the problem.”A New York Yankees official also spoke out on this issue, noting how “the unregulated vile messages” have increased consistently over the years. MLB is actively working with its legalized betting partners to enforce the new rule. The league hopes the new cut will dampen the urge to manipulate the market.
