‘You will be surprised what 12 can do’ – new APNU MP Saiku Andrews Nov 04, 2025 News …says primary focus is holding govt. accountable (Kaieteur News) – First-time parliamentarian, Saiku Andrews, moments after taking the oath to serve in the 13th Parliament on Monday said he is confident that his party, A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) with its 12 seats can hold the government accountable. “…Definitely we will hold those 36 seats accountable, you will be surprised at what 12 can do,” Andrews told Kaieteur News. Andrews, a businessman and gospel singer, was sworn in during the first sitting of the National Assembly. The new parliamentarian who will be shadowing the Ministry of Public Works said that his primary role is to hold the government accountable. “What I intend to do is to hold government accountable,” he declared noting that “As a businessman you always want value for your money. My plan and my purpose are to ensure that the people of this country get their value for money.” The APNU Member of Parliament (MP) noted that, “it’s not sufficient enough to just name projects and execute projects. Do these projects benefit the people? …will they go a long way?” The People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) won the 2025 General and Regional Elections (GECOM) securing 36 seats in the National Assembly while the We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) led by Azruddin Mohamed gained 16 seats, APNU gained 12 seats, and Forward Guyana Movement (FGM) led by Amanza Walton-Desir got 1 seat. Despite the new dispensation in the National Assembly Andrews is confident that APNU’s 12 seats can ‘light fire under the feet’ of those elected to manage the country’s affairs. “We are not fazed by the fact that there are 12 of us in Parliament…there is a famous guy, you know, who took 12 individuals and upturn the world,” said Andrews who assured the 77,988 persons who voted for the party that it means business. “Yes, the PPP has 36 seats in parliament and that means that they will be able to pass whatever bill they need but I think that once we do a good job at scrutinising… first of all, we are not anti-development so we are not gonna oppose for the sake of opposing, but we must be able to get value for projects” he said. The new MP said that whatever is being done by the government in the name of development “must benefit the people.” “…So, the PPP cannot use their 36 seats to allow the economic hitmen who are prying open our doors to get away with murder,” Andrews declared. 13th Parliament, APNU, Saiku Andrews, surprised
