‘We Got Our A**es Handed To Us’: Vivek Ramaswamy Says Republicans Should Worry After Poll Defeats

Republican leader Vivek Ramaswamy urged his party to “learn from defeat” after Democrats scored decisive victories in three major races, including the New York City mayoral election won by Zohran Mamdani. In a video posted on X (formerly Twitter), Vivek Ramaswamy delivered an unusually blunt post-mortem, conceding that Republicans had their “a**es handed to them” in New York City, New Jersey and Virginia. The results mark the first significant set of elections since Donald Trump returned to the White House earlier this year. “We got our a**es handed to us. Democrats swept all three,” Vivek Ramaswamy said, adding, “There are two key lessons for Republicans. First focus on affordability. Make the American dream affordable again. Bring down electric, grocery, healthcare and housing costs.” He went on to warn his party against adopting what he called “identity politics.” “Cut out the identity politics- that’s the woke Left’s game, not ours. We don’t care about colour or religion; we care about character,” he said. Vivek Ramaswamy captioned the post, “Lessons from tonight, no sugar coating.” The comments came after Democrats notched up major victories across the country. Zohran Mamdani, a 34-year-old democratic socialist, became New York City’s first Muslim mayor and its youngest in more than a century. In New Jersey, Mikie Sherrill secured re-election while Abigail Spanberger prevailed in Virginia, reinforcing Democratic strength in key states. Zohran Mamdani Slams Donald Trump In his victory speech, Zohran Mamdani directed sharp words at Donald Trump, pledging to confront the divisive politics that, he said, had “helped elevate him to the White House.” He said New York would be the “light” in a “moment of political darkness” and vowed that the city would never again be one “where you can traffic in Islamophobia and win an election.” The newly elected mayor then issued a message to the US President directly, declaring, “If there’s any way to terrify a despot, it is by dismantling the very conditions that allowed him to accumulate power. That’s how we stop Trump and the next one. So, Donald Trump, since I know you’re watching, I have four words for you: turn the volume up.”
